It’s funny how you meet friends. When I was little, it was so easy to meet new friends between school and the kids in my neighborhood. As we get older, I feel as if it changes. We work, and can meet people there, but it’s not as much of a social atmosphere. It’s so nice to meet someone through a close friend – which is how I met Melissa.
One of my closest friends (who still lives in NY but I tell her she needs to move down here) was going through a bit of a rough patch at the time, so she flew down to Florida for a little R & R and thought it would be fun if we had a sleepover. She had invited a close friend from her college years whom I had not yet met, so the three of us were going to have some dinner at her parent’s country club and then hang out in our PJs, drink wine and keep her spirits high.
I got to her house first and shortly after Melissa, her college friend, shows up. Right off the bat, I noticed she is super friendly, bubbly and chatty – I knew we were going to get a long just fine! We spent that night eating, drinking, and had an all-around great time. The next morning, we went over the latest books we’ve read and exchanged recommendations over coffee.
One other time when my friend was down, the three of us had dinner and once again, it was a great time. Melissa and I kept saying that we needed to get together with the husbands, since we lived (relatively) close to each other. Unfortunately life got in the way and we never were able to solidify plans.
2 years pass and we’re both in the wedding party for, yep you guessed it – our mutual friend! Our husbands hit it off that night as well and plans HAD to be made for when we both got back to Florida.
Fast forward to present time – I’ve gained a fun, energetic and passionate friend whom loves her daytime job as a teacher as well as her part-time endeavor with Rodan & Fields. Let me introduce you to Melissa!!
A little bit about Melissa!
Coffee or Tea? Coffee, largest one possible please 🙂
Red or white wine? Whichever is open lol. No, if given a choice, usually white.
Favorite place to visit? I don’t know if I have a favorite place. I love to travel, so anyplace I’ve never been. And home. Everyone loves to go home.
Flower of choice? Peony
What does your ideal day look like? Waking up and going to a spin or hot yoga class, taking a long shower, getting a massage, going to the beach, a super yummy dinner (with wine of course) and sitting outside talking under the stars. I’m ready to leave now 🙂
Now about Rodan & Fields!
How were you first introduced to Rodan and Fields?
My friend from college, Melissa Darnell, had been posting about the business and products on FB for a couple of years. I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes at first and inquired about products, but couldn’t commit. I was all, “I’m a VIB at Sephora. Why have I never heard of these products before?” I watched her retire from her corporate job in Manhattan, earn a free Lexus and retire her husband. I was in awe and kept watching. And then she sent me a mini-facial. That took me 3 months to try. I finally used it and from that moment on I was obsessed. We chatted a few times after that and within a few weeks, I became a consultant. I haven’t looked back and have become a believer in the company and the products. They are really amazing.
What inspires you most?
Watching these women from all walks of life living the lives of their dreams. Women are creating futures for their family that they never thought possible; all from this “silly little skin care business”. Oh yeah, and they are looking darn good while doing it as well as helping others do the same.
What does a typical day look like?
I wake up at 5:00 to go to a 6:15 spin class 3 days a week, shower there and go to my full time job as a 3rd grade teacher. Get home around 5 pm, walk the dog, cook dinner, clean up, etc. Around 7-7:30, I bring my computer to the couch and spend about 25-30 minutes working my R+F business. That usually includes phone calls, messaging back and forth with people interested in product or the business opportunity or listening to training calls. This is really the only time during the day that I can fully devote to this, but I am definitely seeing my efforts come to fruition.
What have you learned by working with R&F products and the company as a whole?
That anything is possible. I personally know people that have changed their lives, gotten out of debt, won amazing trips and are bringing in significant income working this business on their terms. Besides the perks of the business opportunity, I have watched people’s skin transform and that is honestly one of the most exciting things. I love getting messages from friends who have tried this product saying that they are loving the products or that people keep telling them how amazing their skin looks. It is such a rush of adrenaline knowing that you helped someone love their skin again just by recommending products that you use and love yourself.
What is your best bit of advice to give women when it comes to balancing work and family?
It’s hard. As life gets busier, it gets harder but it doesn’t have to be that way. You have choices and opportunities. One of my favorite quotes puts it into perspective,
“Don’t work so hard making a living that you forget to make a life.” Find joy where you can and appreciate every moment that you are given with those you love. We all get crazy busy, but stop and enjoy the sunsets. They are perfection.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Wherever life takes me. I just want to enjoy the journey 🙂
How much do you love her?
Melissa was kind enough to send me Rodan and Field’s Reverse collection. After asking me some key questions, we determined that sun spots were my biggest issue and the Reverse products would do the trick.
For the first week, I used the products which included an exfoliating wash, toner, two-part serum, and SPF moisturizer every other morning; then upped it to every morning; and then to every morning and night. This was precautionary to make sure I didn’t have adverse effects to the treatment.
Did you know that heat (even cooking over a hot stove), hormones, and sunlight can cause brown spots on your skin. I read that on Melissa’s site and found that very interesting – good thing Rich cooks (hehehe).
At first I was a bit skeptical about the product as I have tried a handful of brightening-type products and I never really saw results. My skin was super smooth after washing – I loved the way the exfoliant cleaned but wasn’t super harsh. I really liked the concept of the serum that both lightens and gets rid of the dullness. Living in Florida, it is so important to apply SPF, not once, but throughout the day. The SPF moisturizer is not heavy – I pop the tube in my bag when I know I’m going to be running around for a while so I can reapply.
I’m on month #2 with the product line, and am really impressed with the overall brightness of my skin. I think I have a little way to go to combat the years of little spots created from sun exposure, but I see this product really helping me out in the long run!
