Normally I would donate the clothing that is in great shape to Goodwill, but I heard about ThredUp and Twice and wanted to give them a try. It was super easy to sign up on their site (free) and in a matter of days I received a bag from each of them to fill.
I divvied the clothing up, knowing that ThredUp was the only one that accepted kids clothing. Here is what I sent out:
ThredUp:
- Nordstrom boys loafers
- Crocs boys sandals
- Old Navy boys peacoat
- Gap Kids boys jeans
- Joe’s Jeans boys jeans
- Ralph Lauren short sleeve boys button down
- Nike Yankees boys jersey
- Gymboree boys long sleeve shirt
- Old Navy boys short sleeve button down
- Old Navy boys khakis
- Tate and Tucker boys cords
- Anthropologie tank top
- Gap Kids black pants
- 7 for all Mankind maternity jeans
- John and Jenn sweater
If you’d like, you can opt-in to their “Return Assurance” program, where for $11.99 they will send back any unsold or unaccepted items. I sent the bag in on January 22nd and received an offer on February 1st. For all 15 items, I was offered $37.28. That comes out to $2.49 per piece for items that were sitting in my closet or outgrown by my boys. Not too bad. There are two payout options:
- Payout via PayPal
- Payout via a site credit
I’m waiting for them to release the payment for PayPal (I heard it can take up to two weeks and I hope that’s not really the case). What’s interesting is that I sent a bag prior to this one and still have not heard back from them. I guess this bag got into the hands of a faster reviewer?
Now on to Twice! Here is what I sent over to them!
Twice:
- 7 for all Mankind jeans (2 pairs)
- Ark & Co. dress
- Zara basic tank (NWT)
- Gap khakis
- Tart tank top
- Matty M dress
- Lululemon workout jacket
- Vince Camuto top
- MiH jeans
- Collective Concepts top (NWT)
- French Connection heels
- Liefsdottir heels
- Lauren Ralph Lauren heels
- True Religion heels
- Uggs clogs
- Sam Edelman flats
- Toms
All of the items above were truly just sitting in my closet. The heels were too high and hurt. Some of the items didn’t fit me anymore. Some pieces I even wonder why I bought them…that’s bad! Of the 18 items processed, 15 were accepted and they offered me $108.50, so that would be an average of $7.23 per piece. With Twice you can opt for them to return all of the clothing to you if you do not like their payout amount. What’s cool about Twice are the payout options.
- I could accept the $108.50 via PayPal.
- I could accept a Target gift card in the amount of $110.00 (a $1.50 bonus).
- I could accept a site credit for $135.63 (you get a 25% spending bonus with this option).
I really didn’t need anything more for my wardrobe at the time (my husband would be so proud that I just wrote that!) so I opted for the PayPal payout and am very happy with the outcome.
The difference between Twice and ThredUp is that Twice sends it ALL back and it is $4.99 – AFTER you decide that you are going to decline their offer. ThredUp will send back only what hasn’t sold or was unaccepted for $11.99 and you DON’T HAVE A CHOICE to accept or decline the initial offer if you had checked off “Return Assistance”, like Twice. I was confused with that and was a bit upset with ThredUp at first, but now it’s OK.
I feel that these programs are a great alternative to consigning clothes at a local consigner and having to wait until the item sells. Here you get a free bag with free shipping to either Twice or ThredUp. You send in what you want to sell and the wait isn’t all that long.
