When I have a headache, sinus issues, etc. I go straight to the medicine cabinet. That’s where my Advil, Allegra – you name it resides. After a bit of research I found out that there are natural ailment cures that can be found in your kitchen!
Work out a bit too hard? Eat some ginger!
Gingerols, the potent compounds that make up ginger, prevent the production of pain-triggering hormones! Add either 1 teaspoon of dried ginger or 2 teaspoons of chopped ginger to your meal daily to help ease muscle and joint pain, swelling and stiffness.
Want to relax muscles? Add 10 drops of peppermint to a warm bath, 3 times a week. Naturopath Mark Stengler, N.D. says that while the warm water relaxes your muscles, the peppermint eases your nerves.
When I was pregnant with my boys, heartburn was a daily pain, literally! Rich in tartaric and malic acids, 1 tablespoon of cider vinegar, when mixed with 8 ounces of water (taken before each meal) can help rid heartburn. The acids in cider vinegar are known to break down the fats and proteins super fast so your tummy can empty faster, lessening the possibility of heartburn.
Garlic is one of my favorite spices – it tastes delicious and can cure earaches!
I get earaches a lot – they seem to come hand-in-hand with my sinus infections. This is how you get rid of the pain: put two drops of warm garlic oil into your ear twice a day for 5 days. Experts at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine say that this may clear up infections faster than prescription medications!
Have PMS? Go for the yogurt! Yogurt contains a lot of calcium; calcium naturally calms the nervous system and prevents painful symptoms, says a professor of gynecology at Yale.
Pineapple subsides gas! Researchers at Stamford University say that eating one cup of fresh pineapple every day can cut down bloating within 3 days! The proteolytic enzymes in pineapple aid in digestion.
I am the queen of sinus infections and just learned that horseradish can help heal my woes. German researchers say that horseradish increases the blood flow to the sinus cavities which helps open and drain the sinuses and heal the infection. They recommend one teaspoon twice daily – a la carte or on a sandwich!
I am sure there are many more items in your kitchen that can help you feel better…please note I am in no way an expert, I just love to find these little facts and share them with you!
