The topic for this post came from an article I read a little while back. I didn’t know what “self-actualization” meant, and decided to dig a bit deeper.
Definition via Reference.com: Self-actualization is a term that has been used in various psychology theories, often in slightly different ways (e.g. Goldstein, Maslow, Rogers). The term was originally introduced by the organismic theorist Kurt Goldstein for the motive to realize all of one’s potentialities. However the concept was brought to prominence in Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory as the final level of psychological development that can be achieved when all basic and meta needs are fulfilled and the “actualization” of the full personal potential takes place.”
In layman’s terms, self-actualization is when you accept yourself and others as you/they are. You lack inhibition and are able to enjoy yourself and your life free of guilt. You treat others the same regardless of background, current status, or other socio-economic and cultural factors.
I think the world needs a little bit more of this…what do you think?
