However long of a time period that your child spends in a daycare or any school setting for that matter, he/she is introduced to germs and sicknesses almost on a daily basis. One virus in particular that I would like to call attention to is RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus).
RSV is very contagious and can survive on surfaces like countertops, toys, doorknobs, chairs, etc. This rapid spreading virus is often contracted through touching, hugging, and kissing. There is no cure, so we need to be in preventative mode when RSV season (late fall to early spring) comes around.
Symptoms of RSV are somewhat similar to the common cold, but in babies, it can be much more severe affecting their lungs, heart, or immune system, and lead to other severe illnesses.
- Coughing or wheezing that does not stop
- Fast or troubled breathing
- Spread-out nostrils and/or a caved-in chest when trying to breathe
- Bluish color around the mouth or fingernails
- Fever (especially if it is over 100.4°F in infants under 3 months of age)
Prevention is key! Here are some steps that you can take to prevent your children – and yourself – from getting RSV.
- Wash your hands frequently. I tell my kids to sing “Happy Birthday” 2 times while they suds up their hands.
- If your child is sick, keep him/her home. It will give him/her time to heal and prevent other classmates from getting sick as well.
- Open doors in public places with a paper towel or the sleeve of your shirt.
If you or your child gets RSV, you cannot take antibiotics because it is a virus. You can do the following to make him/her more comfortable:
- Make sure to rest A LOT
- Drink lots of fluids
- Cool mist vaporizers are good to keep in their room (make sure to clean it out every day).
Please note that I am, in no way, an expert. It is so important that you consult your doctor if you feel that your child is starting to become ill – preventative measures are the best way to go!
