One of the most common and painless ways to get rid of unwanted hair is to shave it off. Other traditional at-home hair removal methods include waxing or plucking your unwanted hair out with tweezers. While all three of those methods have their benefits, they are not your only hair removal choices. Laser hair removal is another option you should definitely consider.
I did laser hair removal over 5 years ago and I couldn’t be happier with the results!
Eliminating Unwanted Body Hair Using a Laser Machine
In terms of clinical hair removal solutions, lasers are often thought of as the best options. They are particularly popular here in the United States, where they are performed more than most other cosmetic treatments in skincare clinics. It has been that way for several decades. Although, the specific laser devices used have changed and evolved since the early days of laser treatments.
One of the reasons lasers are so popular for hair removal is they can be used all over your body, more or less. (They should not be used too close to your eyes.) They also cannot treat hairs growing out of internal areas, such as the inside of your nose or ears. (Don’t think people haven’t asked!)
However, they can help you achieve a hair-free bikini line. Using laser hair-removal equipment to get rid of arm, underarm and leg hair is also common. You can remove a few stray strands, such as on your face or large patches as well.
Other Pros of Laser Hair Removal
Aside from the ability to treat almost any patch of body hair, lasers also have other benefits. One is that they are quite precise. That means they can treat your unwanted body hairs without damaging your skin. It also means they do not miss hairs in the treatment area, whereas it is easy to miss a hair or two when shaving unwanted hairs away at home.
Hair removal lasers are also quite quick. They are capable of treating many hairs in less than one second. For that reason, when you schedule a laser hair removal appointment at your local skin care clinic, it is unlikely to take more than an hour or so. In fact, the treatment of a small area may only take a few minutes, at most.
My bikini and underarm areas took less than thirty minutes – total! Extra time may be allotted for the technician to clean or numb the treatment area prior to the procedure.
Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment Results
When you have a laser hair removal treatment, do not expect immediate or miraculous results. Lasers do not cause hairs to magically disappear. Instead, they weaken the hairs so they will eventually fall out. Sometimes that process takes a series of several treatments, which are often spaced several weeks apart. The laser weakens the treated hairs by using light and heat to damage the entire shaft of each hair, as well as the follicle, which is the hair root.
I used to go every 2 weeks for a total of 7 treatments. I went back twice for upkeep, but haven’t had a treatment in over 4 years and am super happy with my results!
Over time, and possibly multiple treatments, the treated hairs will fall out. Once they are gone, some may never grow back. Those that do are likely to have a finer or lighter appearance than they did prior to treatment. The hairs that do regrow may also take weeks or months to return, which is one of the biggest advantages of laser treatment over shaving. When you shave, only the upper portions of each hair are removed. Laser treatment creates an eventual total loss of the hair, including the lower part you cannot see.
Laser, Waxing or Shaving?
Laser hair removal is an investment but SO worth it in the long run. Have you ever tried laser hair removal? All I can say is do your research, ask friends and family for recommendations when it comes to places that offer the service, and remember to thank me when you see the results!

The lasers have come a long way since the days of them not working well with darker skin tones and/or lighter hair!

Thanks for the article Dana, it’s quite informative for someone who is trying to get laser removal done. Because of the cost, some might not want to go to a professional. Do you think it can be done successfully at home?

Hi Charlice! I don’t think you can do laser hair removal at home. I’d be worried about that – I recommend going to a professional.

It’s great that you elaborate on how laser treatment is an effective method of having unwanted body hair removed. I have some hair on my abdomen that I’ve been wanting to get rid of, so I’m thinking about having it removed with laser treatment. I’m going to look for a good business that offers laser hair removal treatment in my area.
