The seaweed is used to make carrageenan, which is a thickener used is all kinds of things, like coffee creamer, low fat ice cream, yogurt, etc. I don’t find that particularly gross but kind of random. What I do find gross is that carminic acid, or carmine, which is used in some juices, berry yogurts and other things as a red dye, is made from the cochineal which is an INSECT. Shellac is also made from an insect, the kerria lacca. I guess bugs are YUMMY?!
