It was like any other Wednesday. I woke up, got dressed and headed off to work. After spending what seemed like countless hours in the conference room for our weekly staff meeting, I headed rather quickly over to the bathroom. Being 37 weeks pregnant with a baby that seemed to love to sit right on my bladder, meant many trips to the bathroom each day!
This trip was a bit different than the others. Not to be gross, but something came out with the usual stuff. I thought I knew what it might be, so I called my OB-GYN as soon as I got back to my desk. The nurse explained what it was, asked a few questions and then said I was OK. I thought nothing of it and continued on with my day.
At the end of the workday, I started to pack up my computer and paperwork and felt a woosh. I had a feeling that I didn’t just lose bladder control, so I calmly walked to the bathroom. The woosh happened again. I was drenched. I wrapped my cardigan around my waist, grabbed my work bag, and popped my head into my boss’s office.
“Hey Candy! Have a great night…I think I’m leaking or something but I’ll see you tomorrow!” That’s exactly what I said.
HERE’S WHERE IT GETS GOOD…
I called my husband who urged me to call the OG GYN’s office. My doctor said that I should go to the hospital. I wasn’t feeling any pain, but he wanted to make sure that the woosh was my water breaking. I asked if it was OK for me to drive myself to the hospital and he was totally fine with it, so I called my parents and started driving north. My coworker was in the car in front of me on the road, so I called her to tell her what was going on. We were at a red light, so she ran out and gave me a towel to sit on just in case the wooshes happened again. And they did.
I met my parents at a shopping center on the way to the hospital, and my mom jumped in the car so that I wasn’t driving alone. The ride up 441 was like a caravan. I was in the front, with my dad and husband in separate cars following closely behind.
I arrived at the hospital and went straight to the maternity ward. They had me change into a gown and said they were going to do a test to confirm it was my water that broke. At first, the test came back negative, and my response was, “I did not pee in my pants – my water broke.” It did.
My doctor asked me what took so long for me to get there and I explained that I worked 45 minutes away. At that point, I don’t think he was happy that I drove myself to the hospital.
I was then attached to monitors and waited patiently with my family bedside, waiting for the operating room to become available. The baby was breech so I knew I was going to have a C-section either way.
Once it was my turn to go into the OR, the attending nurse said, “OK, get up.” I looked at her, thinking I didn’t hear her correctly. No, she wanted me to walk myself into the OR instead of being wheeled in. Something about it taking my mind off of the situation. It definitely did. I made sure my butt was covered and walked my non-skid sock clad feet into the OR.
I was helped onto the OR table, where they administered the epidural. The first time they attempted it, I think it hit a nerve because my right leg shot up. It was actually quite comical!
So here I was laying there, with the blue curtain blocking my view from what was going to be the birth of my baby. They brought my husband into the room just as they were starting the operation and the only thing I could think of was that my husband was going to see my guts – would he still love me after seeing my guts?
THE GUEST OF HONOR ARRIVES!
At 8:13 pm on April 27th, two weeks before his expected due date, my beautiful little baby boy came into the world. I was so elated – I didn’t know what to say, what to do (I actually couldn’t do much as I was laying on the table and had my arms out like a T”).
That day changed my life forever. I was now a mom. I had a baby. I created, along with my husband, a human being. I never thought I could feel as much love as I do, to this day and forever more, for this little being.
My boss and Nathan!
I am thankful that I had an easy pregnancy. I know, from stories I’ve read and heard from friends and family, that pregnancy is not always textbook. A handful of my friends had extremely hard times conceiving, having to try alternative routes so that they too can become parents. These alternative routes can be taxing on both your body and wallet, but it is your personal decision, and wanting to be a mom can trump everything!
Just recently Stork OTC, a new over-the-counter medical device that you can use at home, during ovulation, to assist your chances in becoming pregnant, approached me. I did a lot of research on the device and was impressed that 20% of women that use cervical cap insemination (basically the Stock OTC technique) get pregnant.
After checking out the demo that they sent over, reading the documents that came along with the device and the videos, as well as the many testimonials on the website, I think this would be something worth a try if you are having difficulties conceiving. I didn’t know that cervical cap insemination has been around since the 1950’s. The Stork OTC is an innovative and more affordable way ($59.99) for you to try this method at home. You can find it at Target (my favorite store!), in the family planning section next to ovulation test kits.
Thank you for reading my birth story!
Have you heard of Stork OTC?

I had to walk myself to the OR last month too. I thought that was so strange but it was kind of funny walking in with the doctors.
Dana says
You did too?! It was weird, right?

Sounds like it was quite an incredible experience. My daughter just wasn’t going to come out. So we had to have a scheduled inducing and then ended up having to have a C-section.
