Some children love learning and they don’t really need much encouragement to enjoy it. Some, however, would rather be doing other things, and it is crucial that learning is made as fun as possible to help them achieve the most out of their time at school.

Teachers will have ways to do this, but it is also important for parents to know how to make learning fun. If they can do this, it will mean that homework is less of a chore and less stressful (for children and parents alike), and it will mean that school becomes less daunting. With that in mind, here are some ways that parents can make learning more fun. 

Use Technology 

Every child will be familiar with technology, whether it’s the internet, devices, AI, or a combination of these things. They will use them in their everyday life, and very often, they will be utilized to great effect at school. So really, why should it be any different at home? 

Parents can use technology successfully to make learning a lot more fun and engaging for their children. This is especially useful if you don’t understand a subject yourself or you were taught it differently from how children are taught today. You can use apps, for example, or online videos. Enjoy Learning Yourself

If you are going to help your child enjoy learning more so they can go to school and get more involved and engaged with their education, you’ll need to enjoy learning yourself. You won’t be able to show the passion and interest you’ll need to if you don’t like learning or don’t see the point of a particular subject or lesson. 

Although you can’t force yourself to enjoy learning if it’s not something you actually like, you can work with your child to show that you are learning at the same time and that you’re getting something out of it. One way to do this is to use learning in practical situations. Perhaps you’re cooking dinner, and you use math to make sure you’re using the right amount of ingredients, for example. If you get the children involved and everyone learns together, it can be a lot of fun. 

Don’t Say It’s Learning

When children are at home, they might not feel like sitting down to lessons and learning more, especially when they have just spent a day at school doing exactly that. However, if they need some extra help or some additional practice, you can’t just ignore the fact. This is where fun learning will be very useful, as long as you don’t say that it’s learning (at least at first).

You might ask them to help cook dinner, as mentioned above. Or perhaps you have other tasks for them to help you out with. Maybe you take them for a nature walk and ask them questions or give them information about plants and wildlife or the weather. By ‘hiding’ the learning in this way, children will gather a lot of information without even realizing it. 

Of course, it’s a good idea to let them know they have learned something when you’re done. This will help them feel good, especially if you praise them about it, and ensure that learning always has a fun element attached to it in the future. 

Play

One of the best ways to make learning fun is to play. Of course, if your children are older, this might be a more difficult thing to incorporate into their day, but for younger children, it’s ideal. You can spend some time with them, which is a great way to bond and have fun, and they will be learning at the same time. 

You could play board games, color pictures, play sports outside (and use the scoring system as a math lesson, for example), do crafts, and much more. Even make believe games that rely on imagination can be turned into lessons if you work on them. 

There are many ways parents can help to make learning fun, even if it seems like a difficult thing to do at first. No matter what, it’s worth persevering because the more a child can enjoy learning, the further they can go in life.
