Everywhere I turn, I hear about ingredients that are in our food that are bad for us. There are also terrible things in our cosmetics that I wanted to bring to your attention! Here is the list of the culprits:
- Parabens or any ingredient ending in -‘paraben‘: I found about these guys a little while ago…check out my previous post HERE. Parabens are known to be a hormone disruptor and has been found in breast cancer cells.
- Mineral Oil: this byproduct of the petroleum industry clogs your pores.
- Methylcloroisothiazolinone: First rule of thumb – if you can’t pronounce it, more than likely it shouldn’t be in your products. This is an allergen and can be toxic to your nervous system
- ‘PEG’ and anything ending in ‘-eth’, TEA (triethanolamine) and 1,4 dioxane: found in shampoos, hairspray, skin cream, sunscreen and BABY SOAP!! – has toxic contaminants that are linked to cancer.
- Laureth sulfate: these toxic contaminants found in shampoo, hair detanglers, body sprays, lotions and liquid soap can cause skin reactions.
- Triclosan and triclocarban: these culprits are in hand sanitizers and antibacterial soap (WHAAAAA!) – they are known to damage our environment, they are a thyroid disruptor and cause skin irritation and dryness. They lost me at thyroid disruptor.
- Scents that are not marked ‘phthalate free’: don’t spray them on your body! They contain formaldehyde and phthalates = TOXINS. “Wow, you smell fabulous! It must be the formaldehyde…” Just sayin’
- Diaminobenzene and Formaldehyde & ammonia: Check your nail polishes, nail polish removers, hair dyes and perfumes…these are toxic to humans!!
- Oxybenzone and Cinnamates: these buggers are known to damage cell protein and DNA as well as disrupt hormones…seriously guys…this is insane! Check your sunscreen – both lotions and sprays MOSTLY ONES MARKETED FOR USE ON CHILDREN. I want to vomit. Now you NEED to read my post on TruKid products HERE!
- Glycolic, AHA and BHA acids: anything with “acid” makes me wonder, although I have had glycollic peels in the past…NO MORE! Worst case scenario they can cause permanent damage – otherwise they can possible only cause photosensitivity, irritation and redness. (insert sarcasm here…only???) You know where these are found – all of the trendy anti-aging creams, serums and peels.

There are so many better products out there, that don’t cost a lot of money, that are SO MUCH better for us!!
I am on the search for better products for you and me! I will report back with my findings.
If you have any products that you would like to recommend, I would love to hear about them! Please post in the comments section
Please note: resources are from EWG.org, Cosmetic Ingredient Review, and Organic Consumers Association. I write about these things because I want everyone to know. I am, in no means, an expert on any of these items.

The other cool part about EWG.org is their Skin Deep database where you can put in any of your products and it tells you the overall toxicity and the toxicity of each ingredient. Love that website!
