If I hear one more person tell me, “Well, they are just boys” I may scream! Yes, my boys ARE boys and in general, boys are a little harder to manage at times. Sometimes I find myself yelling at them, and then feel terrible about it. Don’t get me wrong, they really know how to press my buttons. I just need to know how to handle it, in a calm and mature manner 🙂
Enter The Orange Rhino. I stumbled upon this blog when I was reading one of my Blogher newsletters. The writer explained that she challenged herself to not yell at her children for a year – 365 days! (Not to spoil the ending BUT she just accomplished it!!).
Curious as to how one could accomplish this, I had to read on. This one line hooked me to join the challenge:
I want to be a mom who has the energy and determination to forge ahead and parent with more composure and warmth and without the yelling!
I can do it! (I think I can!). I joined her 30 days project, getting an email everyday with questions to ask myself – what triggers the yelling; is it really something the kids did or something that may have happened at work that put you in the “yelling mood”; what do you do to diffuse the feeling to yell. It was GREAT!
I have committed to the challenge! I am starting TODAY! I have known about this blog and have taken the 30 day challenge and then totally dropped the ball. (Same with my Yogadownload.com subscription – that I am going to start tonight.)
I love that the author gives you alternatives to yelling, resources (the trigger tracking sheet is gold), and real-life situations and what she did to stop from yelling.
I love my boys more than anything in the world, and I want to do everything I can to give them the best (yell free) childhood. TAKE THE CHALLENGE!!
I have no affiliation with The Orange Rhino blog – I just love it!
