I love what I do. It affords me to meet some of the smartest, coolest, and interesting women! I met this week’s Womanpreneur Wednesday, Jamie Lieberman, through a mutual amazing woman, Jenny!
I was at Blogher in 2017, having breakfast with Jenny when her friend Jamie came by the table to say hi. Since then I have followed Jamie’s career and love the knowledge and service she is providing for influencers.
MEET JAMIE!
When you were little what did you want to be when you grew up?
Wonder Woman
NOTE: Love that – I think you are pretty close!
How did you come up with the idea for Hashtag Legal?
After speaking at a conference, I realized that the content creators and creatives were lacking legal representation from an attorney who understands their businesses.
What is the biggest struggle you’ve encountered as an entrepreneur and how did you solve it?
I struggled to price my services. Confession: When I started my business, I was charging far less than the value I was giving my clients. I had a potential client tell me that my rates were too little and then I knew I was doing myself a disservice. I started to speak to my other clients about the issue and eventually just made the decision. I sent personalized emails to all of my clients and they were all really supportive. I waited too long to do it!
What do you think are the pros and cons of being a womanpreneur?
Pros – independence, ability to empower other women, flexibility Cons – balance! difficulty in turning off work.
Do you have any mentors or coaches that you work with?
I don’t have a specific mentor or coach, but I do learn from each of my clients through their experiences. It is the best education I can get!
What advice would you give to someone reading this that has the entrepreneurial “itch”?
Go for it, but go into a business endeavor with open eyes about what it really looks like and what your end goal is.
What is the secret to achieving work-life balance for you?
Boundaries and saying no. My automatic answer to all inquiries is no (in my head, not out loud!) so I can evaluate whether the opportunity makes sense for me. Each new opportunity will take time away from another, so I want to be sure it is a good use of my time. And that doesn’t always involve money – sometimes there is something else I gain from an opportunity, like satisfaction from helping others, that will make it valuable.
How do you find inspiration?
From my clients. Watching them grow their businesses and taking risks is the best inspiration in the world.
What is your favorite book?
I can’t choose! Becoming by Michelle Obama is my most recent favorite.
What is your favorite quote?
“Women belong in all places where decision are being made … It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.” Ruth Bader Ginsburg
What do you do to decompress?
Hanging out with my family, exercising, traveling and reading.
A HUGE TAKEAWAY
The first time I heard Jamie speak at Type A, I was super impressed with her commitment to helping influencers but even more so – being true to herself in not undervaluing her services.
I feel that is one aspect of our businesses that we sometimes fall prey to and need to come to terms with what our time is truly worth.
