As we head into the season of fall, it has many of us looking for things to do inside when the weather isn’t so nice. It can be harder to keep the kids entertained, without the chance to head out to the beach, to the forest, or to the park for them to let off steam. When they are cooped up inside and not able to run around you can find that they end up squabbling with siblings or playing up. This is why it is a good idea to have plenty of things on your list that you can do with your kids when it rains. We have put together a list of some ideas to get you inspired…
Throw a home movie night (or day)
Take your movie watching up a notch for this one! Instead of just sticking the kids in front of the TV and putting a film on, why not throw a proper-themed movie night or day? You can get some tickets printed and go shopping to put together some snacks for everyone. Why not make up some sweet bags or some boxes of popcorn? You can decorate the space with banners and decorations to make it feel like a movie theatre and have the kids pick the film they want to watch. This is a great family activity that you can all do together – why not even have a movie marathon? Or do a different film night each week where you pick film names out of a hat?
Teach them how to cook
Cooking is something that the kids are sure to love and is also a really useful skill for them to learn as soon as they can. Why not cook all together as a family? You could devise a menu and say that you’re having a little dinner party. You can decorate the dining room or table and have them draw up menus and fold napkins. There are many meals that you can teach them to cook, such as showing them how to make delicious spaghetti meat sauce in the instant pot as well as different starters and desserts. Go shopping together to get ingredients and get them involved in each step of the process. They are sure to love eating the food that they made and will want to help out more in the future! Ask for their ideas and input throughout and make sure they are always supervised when using things such as the oven and other kitchen utensils that might be a bit dangerous!
Do some art and craft together
Sometimes the best thing to do with kids is to get messy and that is just what you can do with some art and crafts. There are a host of different arty activities you can do and it can depend on the season that you do them. If it is autumn, you could make collages from leaves and twigs that you have found outside. If it is near the festive season, you could make Christmas cards, wreaths, or other decorations that you can put up around the house. For Halloween you can carve pumpkins, or perhaps you can just do some painting or drawing. Pinterest or craft blogs can be a great source of inspiration when you are looking for craft ideas to do with the family – you are sure to find lots of ideas!
Make a blanket fort
A blanket fort is great fun and can provide hours of entertainment. Get together as many blankets and cushions as you can and use objects such as chairs and tables to create a blanket fort. Blanket forts not only provide entertainment while you are making them, but once they are finished they make a great spot to play in, relax and enjoy. If you have made it in the playroom or the kid’s bedroom, you could add in some fairy lights and even suggest to the kids they have a camping-style sleepover in their blanket fort. If you have enough space, why not make two? You could have both your children make their own and do it as a competition!
These are just a few ideas of fun things to do with your kids when it rains. There are plenty of great things you can do inside and you are sure to have fun all together.
