If you’re looking to make better use of the good weather coming up, then you might have the idea to foster a little more enjoyment of the garden and to use it a little more. Or you might want a little more natural light and connection with the environment to shine through to the interior. One great way to manage both is to help connect the interior of your home with the garden surrounding it. There are a variety of ways to do just that, including the following.
Give yourself an outdoor area that’s worth enjoying
First of all, you should make sure that you actually have a garden that’s worth connecting to, in the first place. There is, of course, the question of aesthetics and whether your garden is looking good enough for you to want to look at it all day. Beyond that, however, you also have the question of what it’s used for. If the answer is “not much” then you might want to look at the possibility of building the perfect outdoor entertainment area, whether it’s for outdoor dining, simple socializing, or just relaxing when the weather is nice. A lot of people tend to build these entertainment areas close to the doors leading into the kitchen to seamlessly blend the experience of the home from one area to the next.
Make sure that you have a visual connection to the garden
When you’re in the kitchen, it’s a great idea to be able to look out into the garden without too much in the way of difficulty. For one, it has long been shown by medical studies that seeing and being more in touch with greenery is better for your general wellbeing. One of the best ways to make sure you do this is to open up your windows. This might mean resizing your windows if possible, but it could be a lot easier to opt for lighter window treatments that let in more natural light and give you a better view of the garden, as well.
Open the home up to the outdoors
Of course, you want to make sure that the garden is easy to access and to blur the lines a little when it comes to the boundary separating the indoors and the outdoors. To that end, you should take a closer look at the door that the home uses and think if you can open it up. Replacing a traditional door with a patio door installation can bring a host of benefits. For one, you can legitimately open up a lot more space between the areas which can be great if you’re entertaining and have people coming in and out of the home. It also allows for much easier access to the kitchen when you’re hanging in the garden, while also improving the natural light and ventilation in the kitchen.
Make your outdoor space more comfortable in different weather types
Of course, one of the advantages that the indoors has over the outdoors is the shelter that it can offer when the weather changes. You might not be able to stop a rainy and windy day from ruining your time outside, but you can make it a more comfortable spot for less inclement weather changes, instead. For one, you should make sure that you have an awning or some type of covering to keep you shielded from the sunlight on those warmest days. Adding a little outdoor heating can also make it a lot easier to stay out for longer in the evenings or to enjoy some fresh air when the days are getting colder.
Make sure that the garden allows for privacy
Of course, if you’re making it so that the indoor and outdoor blend seamlessly together, then you want to make sure that you can enjoy the same level of privacy while outdoors in the garden as you would while in the home. To that end, you should think about what you can do to maintain the privacy of your garden. For one, you can create a strong boundary. A fence alone might be sufficient for some, but you can add some extra security to it by, for instance, attaching a green wall to it or by growing bushes near it. Water features can be great for masking the sound produced in the garden as well.
Get more sunlight in your kitchen
It’s not just about making the outdoors more comfortable, it’s also about bringing a little more of the outdoors to the indoors, as well. One of the most important aspects is to make sure that you’re getting the natural light that can really brighten the room and make it feel much more comfortable and welcoming. Aside from your windows and doors, one of the best ways to do this is, if available, to have it come in from above. Skylights can be an excellent option for brightening up a room and for making you really feel much more connected to the outside from the comfort of your home.
Bringing the garden in
It’s not just the sunlight that you might want to bring in, but allowing a little more greenery into your home can help you feel a lot more connected to the environment of the garden, as well. To that end, you should look at the low-maintenance plants that can be a much better fit for the indoors. Your plants are going to need care whatever you choose, but you can at least make it so that you’re welcoming in only those that are best suited to staying indoors. As mentioned, feeling connected to greenery is good for your wellbeing, able to reduce your feelings of stress, and can even improve the air quality inside the home so it’s worth doing.
A home that effectively connects the interior with the exterior is going to feel brighter, more harmonious, and much more relaxing. The tips above should give some ideas on how you can do it, but that’s only the start.
