First and foremost, I am so thankful that my oldest son has a love for reading – just like me! When he was first born, I would sit with him on the family room couch and read aloud “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” everyday. (After that we moved on to “The Great Glass Elevator”.) Almost every night since then, my husband and I would read books to him before bedtime.
I remember one day, when my parents were over for dinner, N took out the Five Little Monkeys book and “read” it. (He memorized it, but listening to him tell the story was priceless. He knew when to turn the page and everything!). Then came the time he REALLY read for the first time. I was speechless (go ahead – insert sarcastic comment here about me not talking LOL). It was music to my ears. I get to go through that amazing experience again with my little guy now. He sounds out the letters when he doesn’t know the word and it is truly the sweetest sound.
Back to the reason for this post 🙂
I just learned about Barnes & Noble’s Kids Club and love it! N is into the Magic Tree House series. He reads these chapter books so fast, and then runs over to the computer to take the online quizzes (www.magictreehouse.com) He eats these books like candy! There’s nothing better than having a child who loves to read. My kids are teenagers now and we still read together most nights before they go to bed. The difference now is that we just sit in one of their bedrooms and everybody reads their own books! I love that time of night!
