I’m all about fact finding. Whether it is to find out a straightforward answer to a question or to learn more about a specific topic, I love researching and then sharing my findings. This week I cohosted a SoFlo Moms on the Go that was dedicated to St. Patrick’s Day so I took to the interwebs to find out some cool facts about this green hued holiday…that wasn’t always green!
ST. PATRICK’S DAY FUN FACTS
Did you know that St. Patrick was not Irish? He was in fact, British!
The first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in my favorite city, New York back in the 1760s. It is still one of the largest parades in the world. No floats or cars are allowed for this parade – it’s all on foot.
The shamrock was initially used as a teaching tool. The three leaves were used to signify the Holy Trinity – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
As I mentioned above, St. Patrick’s Day used to be associated with the color blue, not green! Green was considered to be an unlucky color.
If you are in Ireland for March 17th, you may notice that the population has thinned some. The Irish leave town.
Every year the Chicago Plumbers Local 110 dies the river green in celebration.
Every day 5.5 million gallons of Guinness is consumed around the world. Double that on St. Patrick’s Day.
There are NO lady leprechauns – only men.
Corned beef has nothing to do with corn. It’s just a cut of beef, usually brisket that is made with special spices. The “corn” in corned beef actually comes from the large grains, or corns, of salt that used to be used to cure the meat.
