Giving birth to your child is a huge milestone in your life and is something not to be taken lightly. A lot of moms can struggle to adapt to going back to work and leaving their newborn, and they also are unsure what options may be available to them should they be looking to return back to work.
When returning back to work as a mother there are a few things that you need to take into account and think about before you make any decisions. If you are looking to return to work after childbirth then hopefully these few tips will help you understand what you can do and get you started on your return to work.
Talk to your current employer
If you are already employed then you need to discuss your options that are available to you as they can vary from company to company. Discuss your return to work with them and see what can be done if you’re not ready by the date originally discussed and see what can be done. Opening up discussions with your employer is really important to make sure you know what is going and so do they.
Think about what you need
You need to also think about what you need from the job and what you need to do as a new mom, you need to think about how many hours you really can go straight back to and whether the current contract you are on is right for you. You also need to set new boundaries with your employer, so if you are someone who would stay late or do lots of overtime this probably won’t be possible now so have that discussion with your boss and co-workers so they do not expect it.
Think about flexibility
Having flexibility as a new mom is a great thing as it allows you to stay connected and look after your new child and make sure you get an income. Flexibility also allows you to intertwine your schedule with your partners so someone is always on hand for child care and this can save money on not having to get child care. Think about going self-employed or part-time if your job allows it, if you are a psychiatrist for example try and search for psychiatry jobs that would be home-based or part-time, this gives great flexibility or you can set up your own business allowing you to set your own working times, this is the greatest way to gain flexibility but depends on the career you have as not all of them can be done self-employed.
If you are a new mom or a mom returning to work after you have given birth, you may be unsure what you should do or what your best options may be for you and your new child, hopefully, these few tips will give you some ideas of what you can do and get you started for planning your return to work.
