There is something so important about the community we live in. It’s something that we should all feel a responsibility towards. Rather than just living in it and making the most of its resources, we have got to get into a mindset where we can be more nurturing of everything and everyone within our community. But what does it really take to get into a community-focused mindset, especially if you’ve only recently moved then you don’t know everyone or you feel that the community spirit is severely lacking?
Start Thinking About Causes Everybody Can Get Behind
There are so many things that we could all do to make sure that our community initiative is beneficial to the community. Therefore, appealing to people with their interests at heart will make a massive difference. But what do you do to get inspired? There are many ways you could do this, firstly, by putting leaflets through people’s doors. Rather than sending blanket emails or going on social media groups, you can start by printing out leaflets to go through people’s doors. You can set up a community meeting in the local hall, where people are able to come and speak about issues that are important to them, rather than choosing one initiative that we can get behind. Perhaps you’re better off starting by suggesting what is important to the community and allowing them to have their own voice.
Be Active on Social Media
If there isn’t a community Facebook group already, get one set up. This way, you can keep the conversation going. What tends to happen in the community is that people start avoiding posting or engaging with the subject matter if there aren’t regular posts. You can take it upon yourself to post regularly. However, there’s a fine balance to tread, because if you are that person who is constantly posting on Facebook and nobody else is, you might be seen as a nuisance. Instead, start thinking about what it takes to make yourself an authority on the Facebook page without feeling like you are taking the reins of anyone else.
Liaising With the Community Spearheads
Your local government could be a valuable resource here. If you start to look at causes and concerns that are causing problems with people, whether it’s potholes or parking issues, get in contact with your local government and try to speak to somebody so you can get the problems solved or, at the very least, get the ball rolling. This can help you be more listened to on social media, especially if you are someone that’s not necessarily got the power to spearhead a movement.
Providing a Variety of Solutions
You could start encouraging people to volunteer in the local community, but if you provide a variety of options that people can get behind this is going to engage more people. Rather than providing a huge number, think about four or five that really impact the community. It could be something like homelessness or it could be to do with donating to charities that are local. Whatever it is, make sure that you provide enough to inspire and stimulate people to start looking after their community.
