If you know that your child is not as motivated as they should be when it comes to getting their homework done, then you are certainly not alone. There are many parents who are in the same position as you are right now, but with a bit of time and effort, you can be sure to change things around.
Stop Saying that it’s a Job
When you call homework your child’s job, you essentially tell them that it is going to be all work and no fun. If you do this, then you will set up your child to believe that homework is bad, even when it’s actually not. Sure, homework might not be fun, but it’s certainly not a job.
Don’t Set Conditions
If you put homework in a separate category when compared to play then you are setting them up to not enjoy their study. Play is very important when it comes to your child’s development, so make sure that you do everything you can to try and tell them that both are important. Your child should be able to decide whether they work or play first, and as long as they get them both done at the end of the day, you shouldn’t have a problem. If you give your children autonomy over their decisions, then they may end up surprising you.
Sit with Them
Your child may not be defiant when it comes to their homework. They may simply want to have some help with it, or they may find it difficult to get done without someone to talk to about each problem. Make sure that you are there for your child and also make sure that you give them the support they need when getting it done. If you can make sure that this is the case, then you will soon find that they are far more committed. If you want to give your child extra support, consider looking into charter schools.
Find Out if They Have a Problem
It’s also very important that you find out if your child has a problem with school. They may struggle with certain topics, or they may find that the words just get jumbled on the page when they try to read. At the end of the day, you have to remember that the fault might not be with them and that you may need to give them some kind of support at home to help them get their homework done.
Say You’re Proud
When your child does sit down and do their homework, you need to make sure that you reward this heavily. You need to make sure that you are telling them how proud you are and that you are acknowledging their achievements. If you can do this then you will soon find that you can give them the help they need to reach their potential while also giving them a lot of motivation for the future as well, so make sure that you keep this in mind.
