The morning rush is real. My alarm is set for 6:30 am. Every morning I hit snooze. It goes off at 6:37. Snooze. 6:44.
I think you see the pattern here.
My Usual Morning Routine
Once I get out of bed, I wipe the sleep from my eyes (figuratively and literally sometimes) and head straight to the bathroom to shower.
Depending on if it is a “hair wash day” (I wash my hair every other day unless it needs it because if I washed it daily, it would be way too dry) dictates how long I’m in the shower.
Once wrapped in my fluffy robe with my favorite hair twisty thing on my head (it cuts down my drying time and is better for my hair than rubbing it dry with a towel), I stand inside my closet staring at all of the clothes with the same thought going through my head every day.
“What am I going to wear? I don’t have anything to wear.”
Thankfully, my husband gives the boys their breakfast and walks and feeds Stella. They’d all be starving if they had to wait for me. (When my husband has to go away for business, I have my act fully together…I am usually early. Not so much on a typical day.)
Thankfully my lunch is curated by the chef of the house, my hubby, so that is one thing I don’t have to worry about in the AM.
Next is hair and makeup. I have this routine down pat, so it takes me maybe 20 minutes tops. Days that I just take a body shower can cut 10 minutes from this part!
I fly down the stairs, grab the coffee and egg white omelet, kids, backpacks, lunch, and rush out the door. I more than likely left something at the house that I need for the day – gotta love the morning rush!
Simplify the Morning Rush
I know that I need to get better organized in the morning. My new routine is very similar to the one above, BUT I’ve pinpointed what I can do to shave a few minutes off and make the morning not as hectic.
- Take your clothes out the night before. Check the weather before you do so! Florida weather is weird – they say it is going to rain, and it doesn’t. Then the days it is supposed to be sunny, it pours. Either way, get an idea of temperature!
- Make all lunches the night before. Don’t forget to include snacks, as that is something I would overlook in the past and run back into the house for. Fill water bottles or put them right by the fridge or on your way out the door so you do not forget them.
- Put out the kids’ cereal bowls and cereal out as well.
- Set the timer on the coffee pot, so by the time you get downstairs; it is ready to be poured into a Yeti and go!
- If you plan on going to the gym or a pilates class during or after work, make sure your gym bag is packed. Be sure everything you need is there. I went to the gym during lunch one day and didn’t pack my sneakers. I looked a bit silly walking out of the locker room in my socks, and it hindered a lot of exercises I planned on doing that day. Go one step further and put it in the trunk of your car. Then you have NO excuse not to go to the gym.
- Are you meeting someone for dinner after work and have to give them something? Pack it now!
What steps do you take to make your morning routine less of a morning rush? I’d love to know!
