Now that the summer’s over and kids are back at school once more, it is time for us moms to form a plan to keep them healthy even in the cooler months.
After an active summer holiday it is only natural for the kids to put on a few pounds, but we want to make sure that our children stay fit and healthy all fall long before we reach Christmas.
Today we have some simple tips and ideas to help keep your kids healthy and fit during the fall.
Workout together
The first way to help keep yourself and the kids healthy this fall is to start working out together. This could be as simple as playing football in the backyard, or even doing some workouts in the living room with YouTube videos. If you always struggle to motivate yourself to workout, doing it with the kids can actually help and it will make it feel more like a game. Enjoy your time flexing and stretching and have some fun keeping fit.
Make hidden vegetable sauce
Some kids love veggies and some hate them, and if you have a fussy eater in your house it will be hard to get them to eat all of the nutrients they need each day. That’s why we have a great recipe here to pack a nutritional punch without the kids even knowing! This sauce can be used for pasta, pizza, and chicken Parmesan too!
Ingredients:
- 1 punnet tomatoes
- 1 red bell pepper
- ½ white onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 carrot
- 1 parsnip
- 1 zucchini
- 1 butternut squash
- 800g chopped tomatoes
- 1 tbsp tomato purée
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tbsp mixed herbs
- Chop all of your veggies roughly and place on a baking sheet with salt and pepper, mixed herbs, and oil. Roast for 45 minutes.
- Add to a large saucepan along with tomato purée and Worcestershire sauce and cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Add chopped tomatoes, bring to the boil, and simmer for 45 minutes.
- Blend thoroughly and season to taste.
Use as the base for tomato pasta dishes, as the sauce on pizzas, or for anything else you fancy. The kids will never know!
Eradicate bad habits
It is so important to prevent bad habits your children may have, whether it be an addiction to chocolate, gaming, or eating junk food. When going through any type of addiction treatment you should consider monitoring them and reducing their screen time/ junk food over a certain period of time to get them used to a new way of living. Replace chocolate with fresh fruit as a snack, play outside with them instead of gaming, and start instilling better habits that will keep them healthier and happier.
Get 10,000 steps a day
If you do anything for your kids this fall, get them a simple pedometer to measure their steps. Walking is more important than you think and walking 10000 steps a day is beneficial to the heart as well as the rest of the body and will keep you fit. You can hold a weekly contest as a family to get the most steps and this can be a great way to add some competitive spirit to the household as well as keep everyone in the family healthy.
