I went to my first book club meeting one evening this week – it was GREAT!! I have been looking for a book club to join for quite some time. I tried one that I found through the Meetup website, but I didn’t really jive with the members.
Last month, a friend of mine at work was struggling over a book recommendation for her book club meeting that evening. Next thing you know, I am accepted as a member and ordered the book, Gone Girl, before you could say “BOO”.
This book gets two thumbs up for sure. Each chapter is a different viewpoint (one is of the husband, the other of the wife, repeating). Each chapter evoked either a “whoa” or a “no way” or “shut up!”. I love those books – they keep you thinking and the author does a fabulous job of guiding you toward each of these “feelings”.
About 15 of us book loving ladies gathered at Erin’s house for food, wine and some chatting about the book of the month. It was such a nice night. Each person brought a dish, whether it was a main dish, side or dessert – and a bottle of wine. We all chowed down and caught up with each other (I went through introductions :). Once we were happily fed (and wine-d), we went into the living room and reviewed some of the book club questions that Maria provided. The questions evoked conversations about and also outside of the realm of the book. It was great to be somewhere with people that enjoyed the same past time as myself. The ladies were from different areas of SFL, some worked together and found out about the club (I’d be a perfect example), there were family members, college friends, etc. Such a great mix!
Our next books are The Discovery of Witches
AND
Shadow of Night
Both books are 600 some odd pages, so we are not meeting again until October. I am already knee deep in The Discovery of Witches and am loving it.
Are you a member of a book club? What books would you recommend for a book club?
