Many people use earphones during the day as it gives them a chance to drown out the noise. That being said, you could be damaging your hearing without even realizing it. To make things even worse, you may not even know that your hearing is beyond repair until it is far too late.
Hearing Damage Starts Gradually
It’s important to know that hearing loss starts gradually. You may find that the guitars just don’t seem as bright as they used to and that the drums seem quieter. You’ll then turn the music up to try and hear the music better, and this is how it snowballs. Hearing loss isn’t a dramatic event to say the least, but it is something that happens over time. There’s also a link between hearing loss and high blood pressure, so keep that in mind when assessing your situation.
Music
Headphones that connect to your phone or even your music device can easily go as high as 120 decibels. This is incredibly dangerous because anything that goes over 110 decibels can strip your myelin sheath, which protects your nerve cells. If you end up damaging your hearing this way, then you may find that you end up with permanent damage and this is the last thing that you need. If you are very overexposed to louder noises when you are younger, then you may find that you have severe hearing loss in the future.
Power Tools
Power tools tend to go to around 90 decibels. Chainsaws or anything with some kind of petrol power can easily extend to around 105 decibels If you often use power tools, then it is so important that you take the time to wear the appropriate hearing protection. If you can do this then you will soon find that you can stop any damages from getting worse.
Concerts
Many people experience threshold shifts from time to time. When this happens, your hearing will be muffled for a few days after the concert but then it will return. If you have experienced this in the past, then you should know that this is all due to a chemical process. Your ears do this to try and protect themselves. Sounds appear to lose their resolution when the hairs inside your ear grow fatigued. In order to recover from this, you should go to a quiet room until you are able to regain your hearing. This will help your hearing to come back fairly quickly.
Viral Infections
Believe it or not, viral infections can also cause hearing loss. Measles or mumps are major culprits. If you have a viral infection and you feel as though your hearing is going, then you need to get checked out by a doctor as soon as possible. If you don’t, then you may find that the issue gets worse and that it gets to the point where your hearing becomes permanently damaged. If you see a healthcare professional as soon as possible however then you may be able to remedy the issue while also being able to take much better care of your health in general.
