This past weekend we travelled to visit my sister and her family and to celebrate my youngest nephew’s birthday. It has been somewhat of a whirlwind weekend, and even though the time was short the memories were aplenty.
Thursday night we all boarded Jet Blue with our jackets and gloves, gifts for the kids, and Nintendo 3DSs – we were ready! Deplaning, we felt the cold weather that we anticipated, grabbed our luggage from baggage claim and off we went. We found out that the house had no electricity due to a windy storm that hit the area that day. My sister and dad greeted us with headlamps on – it was so funny. Inside, we brought the kids up to bed and sat by the fireplace for a bit to warm up, before we went upstairs as well. I don’t know if it was colder inside or out (kidding) but everyone seemed to make the best of it.
I woke up Friday morning to my boys and two nephews yelling, “I’m so excited”, and “You farted”, and a “buttcrack” comment mixed in as well. Note: To explain why the conversation was so “enriched” – the 4 boys are between the ages of 5 and 7. I loved that they were so excited to see each other, and sad that there was so much time between last visit and now.
It was FREEZING in the house…still no electricity! I went downstairs wearing three layers on top, my flannel PJ bottoms and two pairs of socks (one being a super thick pair that is conventionally worn when skiing). We tried to make the best of it – my niece and I read our books by the fire, the boys ran around in circles and my husband introduced them to dodge-pillow (instead of dodgeball) which didn’t end so well. My sister had to go into the city for a meeting so as soon as her train arrived, we all met her over in South Norwalk for lunch and an aquarium visit.
It was great watching the five cousins hanging out at the restaurant, watching basketball games and catching up. The Maritime Aquarium was so much fun – I’ll tell you more during Part II.
Saturday was filled with bounce houses, family and friends as we celebrated a 5th birthday. At night, we just hung out – Mom, Dad, hubby, myself, my sister and Aunt Barbara and of course the kids. While the kids ate dinner, we played “Telephone” and it was hysterical. I don’t know what it is about the words “butt crack”, “butt”, “fart”…you get the idea. We had to ban one of those words from the game – it was coming up way too frequently.
Sunday, our last day, was relaxing. We woke up to a very light dusting of snow outside. It was so cute to hear G say, “There’s snow on the ground”, and “There’s even snow on the trees”. LOL -he hasn’t seen too much snow.
While on our outing to drop AB off that the train station, we stopped for some super fast shopping, and then picked up lunch for everyone at home.
Home now, I know for sure that I do not miss the cold – AT ALL. I miss my sister and her family 🙁 Part of my Bucket List is to make sure we see each other more often. We are hopefully going to plan a Sisters Weekend…I’m working on it now!

It’s tough when you live so far apart from family. My sister moved back to Germany and I wish she was here. We only see each other once a year. Thank god for Skype.

It is so hard! Germany is a lot farther away from CT too. I agree with you that Skype and Facetime are the best – you still feel like you are connected and the fact that you can see as well as hear your sister, makes a big difference!
