I’m always looking for how to stay cool in the heat outside. Here are five of our favorite ways to keep cool in a heatwave!
JUMP IN!
I feel that a pool is a requisite to living in South Florida. Whether you have one in the confines of your backyard, within your community, or a public pool nearby – there are MANY days that call for a visit to the pool.
We are thankful to have one in our backyard and equip it with fun floats and toys. The boys love the basketball net, whereas I personally love to lounge on a float with a cool drink (and try to avoid getting splashed).
RIDE THE WAVES
Living in South Florida also affords us the luxury of hitting the beach whenever we’d like. I pack a bag with sand toys, sunscreen, and snacks, and off we go for a few hours of fun in the sun and sand. It gets hot quickly so I am always packing water bottles and have the kids take a break every 20-30 minutes or so to rehydrate and reapply sunscreen.
I especially enjoy going to the beach in the late afternoon when it isn’t as hot and crowded.
HEALTHY & COOL SNACKS
It may be just me but I am all about serving cold, healthy snacks when we are out in the summer sun. Ice cream actually has been linked to making you hotter due to the fat content, so I opt for a different type of cool snack.
I’m always on the lookout for new treats to introduce to my boys and their friends (and for me too, of course!). I came across Froozers in Publix (you can find them in a variety of different retailers) and was really impressed with the fact that they are truly 100% fruit – no purees, no added anything. I learned that when the fruit is at its ripest state, they flash freeze it and then blend it to create the snacks.
It was hard to choose which flavors to try, as they all sounded delish. I am a huge blueberry fan, so I chose the Blueberry Burst but also picked up the Strawbanana Bliss, Orange Zinger, and Raspberry Blast.
My boys loved that the snack comes in a tube form – it’s easy to hold and even easier to eat. We did a taste test and the Strawbanana Bliss was a HUGE hit, although one of the kid taste testers liked at least one of each of the options.
Froozers has the cleanest label in the retail frozen novelty section. You can actually pronounce what is in each tube, as it is all fruit!
WATER BALLOONS!
Water balloon fights are so much fun, especially when it’s a scorcher outside. I can’t believe how far water balloons have come since I was little. I remember sitting by the water hose in our backyard, filling balloon after balloon – one by one – and placing them in a huge plastic bucket. How tedious!
Now you can fill 100 water balloons in 60 seconds AND they are self-closing. Back in the day, I used to despise tying knots in the balloons. My fingers would get sore after a while and I think I ended up soaked in the process.
One caveat to the water balloon fights is that the boys have to go around and pick up all of the balloon remnants.
INDOOR FUN
Although I’d much rather be outdoors, there are days when the heat is so brutal that it keeps us in the air conditioning. There are so many things that you can do, such as:
- Bowling: Everyone loves bowling! A few of the bowling alleys around here even offer free bowling in the summertime. You usually have to sign up for it on their website, so definitely check to see if something like that is available in your area.
- Movies: A lot of great movies come out in the summertime. Opt for a matinee and you’ll save a few dollars!
- Board Games: Instead of Family Game Night, why not have a Family Game Day? My boys love to play Battleship, card games such as War and Garbage, as well as classics like Monopoly and Clue.
I hope my recommendations help to keep you cool this summertime! Don’t forget to try Froozer’s frozen fruit snacks – they have become a game-changer for our family this summer season!

These are all great ideas to keep cool. For me, I try and go to the pool or beach more. I work inside, so I’m able to beat the heat by working (I guess LOL).

Where was that picture of the beach taken? I live in south Florida born and raised and keeping away from the heat is a must

That beach photo is actually from our California trip 🙂

Good choice of Froozers, we don’t have the same over here but ice-popsicle is the must for the summer over here. Staying in the pool is probably the best way to spend under this hot weather.

These are perfect for summer, like fruit juices, the best thirst quenchers. Additionally, kids can also play water gun shooting. I can’t wait for the weekend.

What a great way to keep the kids cool this summer. I love treats like this that are less messy and easy for them to grab themselves.
