The first time I heard about yoga was when I was in college. My cousin always spoke about how great she felt after class and how much more flexible she was. She invited me to a class and I accepted – curiosity more than anything getting the better of me.
At first I was a little overwhelmed. There were about 15 people in this class – all at different levels of yogi-ness. Everyone was super nice and supportive, helping me properly do each of the poses. At the end of that first class I felt a wash of calmness come over me. I was relaxed, stretched, and felt great.
BENEFITS OF YOGA
Some of the health benefits of yoga include:
- increases mobility, flexibility and motion
- helps tone and strengthen your muscles
- helps you stand tall by perfecting your posture
- increases your blood flow
- is known to make you happier – a mood booster
- helps me to focus better
MY YOGA PRACTICE AT HOME
I tried to keep my practice regular, going at least once a week. First I joined a local gym where I’d go to after work. After that, I tried a few of the local yoga studios and found some great teachers.
Fast forward to present day. I look forward to yoga and even more so now! I have terrible lower back pain, so yoga stretching helps to alleviate the pressure I feel and the deep breathing helps to relax me.
Working from home affords me the flexibility to practice throughout the day. What’s even better is that I can practice in my PJs, not have to worry about doing my hair or forgetting my water bottle, considering it is downstairs in the kitchen. How do I do this, you may ask?! I was gifted a subscription to Yoga Download. I’d heard of it before but was hesitant to continue my yoga practice at home because I didn’t know if I’d like it.
YOGA AT MY FINGERTIPS
I can choose my class based on style, teacher, length, level, intensity, focus, and media. I can do it at home or if I am traveling I can do it in the hotel – it’s all online. So great and convenient!
I especially like that there is a mix of free and paid yoga classes as well as meditation classes – my new favorite. There are even customized yoga classes that you can make based on mixing and matching short yoga sequences. Work in an office? There are office yoga classes to help you stretch and get back into the groove while sitting at your desk.
My kids have tried the kids’ yoga classes and aside from a bunch of giggling fits in the beginning, they actually become a bit calmer (thank you!) and relaxed afterward.

Yoga is something I definitely want to try but I don’t think its for me. I’m way to hyper and prefer to get active to calm. My kids on the other hand would probably laugh at first too but I can totally see them benefiting from.

I so want to get into yoga, but I just can’t seem to get into it on my own. As you’ve mentioned it has so many benefits so I really want to try to make it work. I may need to take a few classes at the gym just to familiarize myself with the different techniques then I can really take advantage of an online yoga program.

The first time I got into yoga was in college too! Now it’s hard for me to go a few days without it, it has so many great benefits for your body & mind!
Dana says
I agree with you Mimi! Is there one particular type of yoga you like to practice?

I really like yoga and I think it is a great addition to general strength training (I lift weights regularly). I believe too many men are missing out on this because they think something like: “yoga is for women”
Recently started doing yoga again after a long break. Obviously, I expected to have lost some flexibility… but I was surprised by how much lol. However, after 3 weeks now I can already feel how it has changed me for the better 🙂
