My oldest son is going to be a teenager in 6 months. How is that possible? As he’s grown, his preference in toys, tv shows, clothing and even his bedroom design has changed. Although I want to plug my ears and chant, “La La La La”, simply because I don’t want to accept the fact that he’s getting older, I know it’s a reality AND I want him to be able to feel comfortable expressing his newfound taste and preferences.
A few weeks ago, N made a comment that he was too old for stuffed animals and the “things on his walls”. I was a bit sad at first, as I was the one who used to make the decision to refresh his room. When he was first born, his room was entirely New York Yankees. When he was a toddler, and we moved him into a larger room as his little brother was on the way, we changed the theme to sports. When we moved into our new home, his room became a hodgepodge of his love of sports, anime, and surfing. It was kind of a free-for-all.
BEFORE THE MAKEOVER
N’s bed was in perfect condition, as was his dresser, so we decided that he would need a new desk and chair, and space for him to hang out with his friends or just chill on his own.
CHANNELING THE HGTV IN ME!
I’m a huge HGTV fan, so once I had the thought in my mind of redecorating, I was raring to go! I logged on to City Furniture’s website to check out their Kids & Teens collections. N’s bed and dresser (prior City Furniture purchases) are both an espresso color wood, so I needed to find complementary pieces. I wanted him to be a part of the decision-making process, so we sat together at the kitchen table and did some furniture shopping.
There was a lot to choose from, but N really liked the Highlands pieces. We chose the Highlands Dark Tone Desk along with the matching desk chair. Also, apparently the red cube I thought was cute for a nightstand didn’t pass N’s test, so we decided to also get the Highlands Dark Tone Nightstand.
I wanted to dedicate a portion of his room as a place to hang out comfortably. We chose two of the modular armless chairs in dark grey – perfect to create a “cool” spot in his room!
THE REVEAL
N cleaned his room (translation – we cleaned his room because City Furniture was delivering the pieces at 9:30 am as scheduled, and N had not yet done so by 9:00 am that morning!).
We received a call that morning, giving us the 3-hour window. We received an additional call 20 minutes before the delivery truck arrived, which was nice in case I was out and about and needed to be home.
We chose premium delivery, which included the delivery personnel putting the furniture together and bringing everything to the room. N’s room is on the second floor so this was a huge help.
I couldn’t wait to organize the furniture and surprise him with the final product!
He loves basketball and the beach, so I tried to incorporate both into the new design. We already had that huge wave canvas so that stayed, but we needed some more themed items to add to the design.
I was tired of seeing books, water cups, and little nic-nacks all over the floor by his bed. He needed a proper nightstand and this one works perfectly. I love how the finish of the new furniture blends so well with what he already has (prior City Furniture purchases!).
The desk was a huge hit as he’s been getting a lot of homework lately and needs that extra space to spread his work out!
He ran and jumped on the modular armless chairs as soon as he saw the new “hangout area”. (He did say the area would be perfect with a flat screen TV, but I ignored that.) I figured that would be a great place for him to hang out and “get away” from his little brother for a little while.
Now N’s room is more of a “teenager” room with the place to hang out and a dedicated studying area. What do you think of the transformation?

I love what you did with the space. City Furniture has some really nice pieces. Great job!

Thanks Bill! It’s hard to find the right pieces for the room but City Furniture made it super easy! 🙂

Heather says
It looks great! I have an 8-year-old and a five-year-old, and we just moved into a new house 20 days ago! I’m hoping to paint the boys’ rooms a color that will grow with them so I only have to do it once. My eight year old might soon need a larger desk, but hopefully, I can keep him, my little boy, a bit longer. 😉
Dana says
Congratulations on your new home, Heather! I hear you about wanting to paint the room one color that will last over the years – I am not a fan of painting 😉
Becky Willis says
I love the nightstand! Forever I hadn’t had one and finally, I do and I wonder how I got along without it. His room looks awesome! I do love that you kept the big wave picture it really adds to his decor.
Dana says
Becky, it is funny you mention about not having a nightstand. My son didn’t have one until now and was confused at first what to put on it, and do with it. Once he realized he could rest his water cup on it, put his books on top when he’s ready to go to bed after reading…he was super excited!
Sue Reddel says
They’ve got a lot of furniture pieces that look great and fit in with your son’s lifestyle. His room looks terrific.
Dana says
Thank you, Sue! His room is very cool – and he loves it!!

I love the makeover. Every child could use a desk in his/her room. Both of my children do and it provides them a quiet place where they can do their studying. They used to study in the kitchen, but it just gets too loud. I have to check out City Furniture when I’m ready to update our guest room.
Dana says
Thank you, Nancy! I agree about studying and doing homework in the kitchen. My kids used to do so as well, but there is too much noise and too many distractions.
Jenn @ EngineerMommy says
I love the way you decorated your kid’s room. It’s great that City Furniture has so many nice pieces. My kids love to have a say in their room decor.
Dana says
Thank you, Jenn! I think the kids really appreciate when they have a say in decorating their space, and they appreciate it a lot too!

I agree Karissa! (I especially love the spa days ;)! )
Rosemary says
Love it – always fun to do a whole room. I’m not familiar with City Furniture – is it a local store?
Dana says
Hi Rosemary! It was a lot of fun – we had to match with some existing furniture, but found it a lot easier than initially anticipated 🙂 City Furniture is regional 🙂

I agree – we have a couch from City Furniture that we purchased when we moved into our first home together. It is now 14 years old and in great condition!!!
