I am so excited to see the opening ceremonies for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London! (Just in case you didn’t know, they begin at 7:30pm on NBC. )
The website www.london2012.com has a wealth of information about the Olympics – from its history all the way through to stats and upcoming events.
There are certain elements that must be in every Ceremony, as outlined in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) charter.
- Receiving the Head of State: For the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, Her Majesty the Queen will be greeted by Jacques Rogge
- Parade of Athletes: did you know that the Greek team always enters first and the Host team enters last, with all other participating teams in the middle (in alphabetical order)
- Speeches
- Olympic Anthem and Flag
- Oaths: A participating athlete, judge and coach from the Host Nation stand on the rostrum and, holding a corner of the IOC flag in their left hand and raising their right, take the Oath, vowing to compete and judge according to the rules of their respective sport
- Torch and Cauldron: this is when the Olympic flame arrives!
- Creative Team: this is my FAVORITE PART!!! They anticipate it to begin at approximately 9:00pm EST. This is the test for the Host Team to show the world what they are all about.
Which of the Summer Olympics sports is your favorite? Comment below!!
