Although only a half-mile wide at its widest point, Long Beach Island, New Jersey, is still stocked with fun things to do, whether for a week-long vacation or a quick weekend getaway. And given its location at the center of New Jersey’s shore, the island is easily accessible from almost anywhere in the state, and really isn’t too far from anywhere else in the Northeast. If you’re looking for some quick relaxation and an easy getaway, our recommendations – other than lounging on the beach all day – may just convince you to plan a trip to Long Beach Island!
Take An Evening Cruise Through The Bay
One of the best ways to explore an island is from its surrounding waters, which is easy to do here given the many boat tour options offered. Some companies even let you bring your own snacks and drinks, and if you’re lucky, you may be able to spot a porpoise – the close relative to the magical dolphin species! Whichever cruise you pick, though, we’d recommend trying to time it so that you can watch the sunset from your deck over the glistening waters.
Indulge In The Beach Town Nightlife
Some of the “nightlife” options on Long Island Beach are fairly family-oriented – such as late-night mini-golf for instance. If you’re looking for something a little bit more mature for your night out, though, there are plenty of beach bars to chose from on Long Beach Island. Contrary to misconception though, there are not casinos. Atlantic City isn’t too far away, and New Jersey has online gaming now as well, but this doesn’t mean every beach town up and down the coast has its own casinos. We mention this simply because some make the assumption, but to be clear the bars offer plenty of opportunities for a fun night out.
Let Your Inner Kid Thrive At Fantasy Island
You will feel a pleasant tingle of nostalgia come over you as you walk through the gates to the Fantasy Island amusement park. First opened to the public in the 1980s, this park is everything you’d want from a sort of vintage amusement experience. Primarily geared toward families, its rides are fairly tame – but they’re all still very enjoyable, and worth the gold tokens it takes to ride them. Meanwhile, if roller coasters aren’t your thing, there is also a giant arcade with all the classic games you loved to play as a kid, and a generous supply of prizes to chose from.
Eat Your Fill At Local Restaurants
As we’ve all been telling ourselves for our entire adult lives, calories don’t count on vacation! This rule will be especially important as you dine on Long Beach Island: from gigantic ice cream cones to freshly caught fish, you will be able to satisfy all of your cravings and then some. If you’re looking for a hearty breakfast, The Chicken or The Egg is our favorite diner around; if you’re looking for an evening establishment, perhaps for a romantic night out, aim for The Gables.
Hopefully, with some of my recommendations in mind, you’ve already started packing up your car with beach towels and flip flops as you prepare for a trip to Long Beach Island this summer!
