Don’t throw away your banana peel! Did you know that there are some interesting home uses for that otherwise useless peel?
- Have a mosquito bite? Rub the peel over bug bites or poison ivy to reduce the itchiness and promote healing!
- Need fertilizer? The magnesium and calcium in the peel are great for rose bushes and tomato plants alike. For indoor plants, you can soak a banana peel in a jar of water. Combine one part of the resulting banana peel water with five parts of regular water in a watering can.
- Natural teeth whitening! Rub a banana peel on your teeth for about two minutes after brushing. The manganese, magnesium and potassium helps whiten the enamel.
- Silverware not so silver? Blend a banana peel with water and use on your silverware with a soft cloth!
- Shoes need a shining? Rub the inside of the banana peel on your shoes and then buff off with a soft cloth.
Have you heard of any of the uses above? Do you have any other uses for banana peels?

We throw our banana peels in our composter, but I can see that there are many other things that I can use it for first! I could whiten my teeth, create great water for my house plants and still throw it in the composter! I know bananas were awesome…but this is the coolest! Pinning to my garden board! Thanks.
Dana says
Yes, you can totally use the peels for other things and then compost when done! 🙂 Thanks for visiting and pinning!!

Who knew?!! These are all really cool tips. Next year when the mosquitoes return I will for sure try this.. cause there’s nothing worse than having an itchy bug bite!
Dana says
Liz, I cannot agree with you more about how annoying mosquito bites are! I thought the season ended at the beginning of this month but I think they are worse now than a few months back!

Haha that is crazy! I’m wondering if the sweet scent of bananas I would be omitting from my teeth or a bug bite would attract more bugs or not. I would be all for a little less chemicals and a little more natural. We have bananas stocked in this house at all times.
Dana says
LOLOL very valid questions Rose!!
