I love to read and the minute my boys were born, I wanted to introduce them to books and reading. When I brought my oldest son home from the hospital, I couldn’t wait to start reading to him. I made it a ritual to read to him during the day. Our first book was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. He may not have understood the story, but just the feeling of holding him and reading made me so happy!
Once he got a little older, we created a new ritual…dinner, bath, book and then bed. He would love when we would sit in his Thomas the Train tent and read Five Little Monkeys. I remember one day, when he started to speak, he was sitting outside with my mom and dad and was “reading” them that same book. He memorized it – but oh my goodness – to hear him speak (he didn’t make a sound until he was over 2 years old) and “read” – melted my heart.
Slowly, he learned to read and yes, I did cry the first time he read me his first sentence. Now, he loves to read and asks me to go to the library or Barnes and Noble all the time. My younger guy is the same. He reads to me, then my husband, and sometimes then my older son every night.
It is so important to introduce and reinforce the love of reading. It broadens the imagination and opens so many doors. Today being Family Literacy Day, is a perfect day to start or celebrate reading with your family! Mabel’s Labels is offering 20% off book labels in honor of this fabulous day! 20% off Book Labels at Mabel’s Labels! How great!!
This offer is good through January 28th. I like the book labels especially because my boys like to bring their books to school and show their teachers and/or friends. With a book label, there is less of a chance for the book to get lost and not come back home!
