Did you know that people spend about 40 hours a week on holiday-related tasks? From shopping, to wrapping gifts, to decorating and prepping for the parties – it all adds up!
Holidays and party planning in general can bring with it some stress. In most cases, it is a “good” kind of stress (if there is one) – figuring out the guest list, what to serve, decorations, and more – can become a little overwhelming. I did some research, hoping to figure out the secrets behind those calm and collected hostesses. Now I can’t guarantee eternal bliss with these stress-free party planning tips, but I used some this past weekend, and they worked pretty darn well!
TAKE A WALK
You’re holed up in the kitchen, have a house filled with guests and 5 million things going through your head, and you can’t remember what to do next. I recommend stepping aside and taking a 10 minute walk. Get some fresh air – deep breathing helps a lot. Try to clear your mind so that when you reenter the kitchen, you’re on point and ready to tackle the lasagne!
HOKU TIME
This was the first I’ve ever heard of this, but there is a spot on your hand between your thumb and pointer finger called the Hoku spot. Squeeze that area, as it is a pressure point known to help ease stress. It will feel a little tender when you squeeze it.
BLOCK PINTEREST
There comes a time when you need to step away from Pinterest. I like to create a Pinterest board in the beginning stages of planning a party. I pin food ideas, decorations options, favors, invitation concepts and more to this board and go back to it once I’ve exhausted every search. BUT – there comes a time that you need to make a decision as to what you’re going to do and stick with it. Perfect is boring. Do your best – more than likely no one will notice the tiny imperfections that you do.
SPICE IT UP!
Spicy food has been known to increase endorphins, which in turn increases that fabulous feeling of well-being. Grab a handful of wasabi peas or add a little sriracha to your rice bowl (yummmmm).
TUNE IT UP
Music is a great way to set or change a mood. If you’re a little on edge, maybe it’s time you danced the stress off! Turn on your favorite dance music and shimmy the irritating feelings away. Playing jazz or classical music can help to calm you. Whatever genre of music makes you feel good is what you should be tuning in to!
JUST SAY NO
There are times you just have to say no. If you’re like me, you like to appease everyone but there comes a time that all of the “yes”s become overbearing and you’re almost drowning in “appeasements”. Know your limits and how to kindly decline. Say something like, “I would truly love to (enter request here) but I am super busy.” You can offer alternatives to the requestor as well, helping out as much as you can without stretching yourself too thin.
I hope this list of stress busters help you the next time you plan an event!

Never knew about this pressure point on my hand and will try to remember to use this technique. There are times when we need to excuse ourselves to refocus and breath. Knowing when to say no is important and don’t beat yourself up over it.

“Just say no” has always been a tough one for me – I’m a people pleaser. But lately, I’m learning that saying no is exactly what I need to keep my sanity.
Dana says
I agree, Destany! It is so hard to say no but sometimes it is the best answer to give when you’re overloaded!!

Great point about Pinterest! As much as I love it, it makes me feel completely inadequate. I’d rather look at it during the year and practice when I’m not rushed.

What a great reminder! Especially the music. I need something to keep my focus humming through the day!

This is great advice! Sometimes you just have to say no and music definitely has the power to transport you to another place and time when you need it.
Dana says
I agree Emerald! Music helps me relax so well!

I never knew this was called a Hoku spot. I did know that if I had a really bad headache it was a good place to rub and would alleviate my headache a bit.
