Seriously…that is what I heard this morning when we were standing with my sons’ school group, waiting to line up for the 1 Mile Read, Race and Recycle Fun Run. Ironic a bit, no?
Regardless of who sponsored this event, I have to say that I am very impressed with the boys’ school’s Physical Education teacher, Mrs. Patelsky. I believe she has planned over 3 runs so far this school year, heads up the Mile Club – the after school exercise/running club, and is at every extracurricular event we have been to thus far. That’s a lot to say considering the boys’ last school, albeit a great place for learning, did not emphasize exercise and healthy living as mush as this one!
We woke up early this morning, fueled up on chocolate chip pancakes and coffee and headed out to the race. It was such a great experience for the children and parents…I got to meet some of the boys’ friends and their moms and dads.
BRAG ALERT!! The first mom I met, said, “You’re G’s mom? I hear about G all the time from my son. They have a great time together.” The second mom I met said, “That’s N? I hear about him every day. Alex tells me ‘N and I did this together’ and ‘It was so funny when N did that”…could I be any prouder!! My worries about them making friends in their new school has disappeared. MY SMILE IS FROM EAR TO EAR!
Watching the boys run motivated me to get off my tush and get some quality running time in myself. Considering the fact that I signed up for 2, yes 2, 5Ks in the coming month – I realized it would be a good idea!
I ran…2 miles…all but 2 minutes of the 24 total minutes was running. Seriously! I walked the first two minutes as a little warm up, and then let the music and my feet take me the rest of the way! When I passed the house, N ran up to me and gave me a hug (Sadie also tried to run with me). I kept going – it felt GOOD!!! I FEEL GOOD!
If I can do it, you can also – maybe your goal isn’t running; maybe its reading more books, or writing a book, or yoga, or learning to cook – anything. It took my little men to give me that push of motivation. I am grateful, a bit sweaty and out of breath, but smiling and feeling fabulous!!

I love the positivity here. I suppose McDonald’s sponsoring a race might be akin to a Tobacco company having to sponsor anti-smoking education. But I have to say McDonald’s has made more of a push to offer healthier food items on the menu. As for running, the last time I did that was a Disney Run at Social Media Moms last year. ha ha. I am soooo not a runner.

I agree with you Heather in that McDonald’s has been taking a healthier approach to their food options. It was just funny b/c my husband and I remember, as a child, equating Ronald McDonald with delicious fast food (I still crave their fries every now and then!)

The first step is always the hardest, hopefully you can keep it up! I think maintaining an exercise regime is one of the hardest things about being a mommy since a lot of activities are not kid-along friendly! I’m counting down the minutes until I can get myself back into a ballet class, but unfortunately having a baby who nurses every 2 hours makes it nearly impossible!
Dana says
I agree with you completely! It has taken me (gasp) 5 years to get back into some form of a routine – I need to keep it up! Before you know it, you will be back in ballet class wondering where the time went!

Great job Dana! I need to find some motivation to run. My neighbor and I “walk” but we really need to get to jogging or something! We usually take our kids while they ride bikes so maybe we can make it fun and race along with the kids while they ride.
Dana says
Thank you Felicita! I think it is great that you and your neighbor walk – you are getting out there and exercising!! I like your idea of running alongside the kids on their bikes…I may have to try that!

Good for you and your family for getting out for a fun and healthy family event. Thanks for sharing your motivation. I am getting ready to start the couch to 5k.
Dana says
Kristy, thanks! Good luck with the Couch to 5K! Keep me posted!!

2 5k in a month, that’s a good start. I have to say I was surprised with myself when I gave myself a challenge a couple years back to enter a 5k. It had crept up on me and it was a week away and mind you I don’t run nor jog,bad knee. So I tested myself before I paid the fee and decided to try to run the course, trying not to walk any. Since I didn’t do so bad I paid the fee and ran a week later. Have to say that I was proud of myself didn’t walk not once! And did it in 32 minutes! But I’m glad I pushed myself to not talk myself out of it. Have fun with your boys and go get a run in:)

A 5K in 32 minutes is awesome!!! I hope I can do as well as you did!!
