When it comes to the younger generation, there is a visible difference in how they are growing up and how we grew up. While the millennials are always greeted with positive remarks as far as their intelligence is concerned, their physical health is not in such good shape. Be it the excessive use of smartphones or just plain laziness, the younger generation is at a larger risk for health hazards, especially keeping in mind the fast food industry and their lack of interest in “moving”.
So how can a parent be a life saver and actually motivate their child to be more active and healthy?
Read on to know more.
1. Taking the First Step
If you expect your child to be physically active, you need to move yourself too. Children, especially the 5-12 years age bracket, are always sparking with energy. So why not use it to an advantage? The best way to encourage them is to indulge them in outdoor activities and participating yourself too. Play tag games with them, invite over families and spend time outdoors. The more people you involve, the more games they can discover and the more active they will be.
2. Limit the use of Electronic Devices
One can not simply throw away all the electronics with the fear of over-use. Yet, the most unhealthy activity has to be the excessive use of tablets and smartphones. For this parents need to keep a check on their children and setting time limits can actually benefit them. This can also be enforced by using a parental control app like mSpy, PhoneSheriff, etc.
Sometimes the tablets will help keep your child occupied while you get over with some tasks, but by being more communicative you can involve them in those daily routine tasks and chores and in this way they can learn time management and how not to be addicted to these smart-devices. With fitness trackers like fitbit for kids, you can actually put these devices to a even better use and monitor your child’s physical activity and health.
3. Outdoor Activities
A traditional family trip up in the hills can actually motivate your younger ones to be more physically active. While camping is losing its charm, its significance can never be ignored. Setting up tents in forests, hiking, experiencing nature, all these have immense effect on the notion of human mobility. Plus the younger fellows will certainly enjoy the change of environment. This is a perfect moment to actually take them along long hikes and walks. Not only will you get to see so many different sites but this can really help develop their athletic abilities.
4. Right Food
Physical activities can really change your child’s health, however giving them the proper diet is what will impact them even more. Sure the McDonald’s burgers are a favorite, but there needs to be a balance. Nevertheless, in their growing years, children need even more protein, fiber and organic food which would build their muscles and give them strength.
And while there is nothing that can beat homemade food, if the taste is bland it can send them running in the opposite direction. To overcome this, you can encourage them to take part in cooking. This will not only help them understand the right kind of food to eat, but they will get a chance to experiment with their taste buds.
It’s super important to keep these tips in mind when it comes to our little ones. They love to play their electronics or watch the latest cartoon, but we need to keep them moving and motivated – I hope these tips help!

I agree that the most unhealthy activity for kids is the excessive use of smartphones. I once took my kid, Miguel, to the local grocery store and he kept on throwing tantrums until I gave him my phone to play with. I don’t want my child to get used to this behavior, so I’d be thinking of activities that could help him improve his overall health and developmental skills as well. I’m considering getting him to read books instead, so I could also participate.
