I am sure you know that the Winter Olympics start on February 6th! It’s a bit confusing because the Opening Ceremonies are not going to be broadcast until 7:30 pm on Friday, February 7th, but that’s because the games are all the way in Russia and the time zones come into play…Here are some cool Olympic facts:
Did you know…
The first Olympics games was held in 1896 in Athens, Greece? There were 200 participants from 14 countries. To put how HUGE the Olympics is now…118 years later there are over 10,000 athletes from more than 200 nations!!
The 1st Winter Olympics was held in Chamonix, France in 1924. Bon Jour!
Norway holds the record for the most medals won at the Winter Olympics – 263!
The US runs circles around other nations for the most Summer Olympics medals – 2,189!
Until 1994, both the Winter and Summer Olympics occurred every four years on the same year.
The first time the Olympics was televised was in 1936.
The Olympic flag’s five rings symbolize Africa, Asia, Australia, the Americas and Europe and are said to be ‘linked together in friendship.’ Every national flag of the world has at least one of the five rings’ colors – blue, black, green, yellow, and red.
