When was the last time you put pen to paper in the pursuit of writing a letter? Many people wouldn’t remember the last time they wrote a letter because in our current society we just…don’t. We write texts and leave voice notes, cultivate emails and do all that we can to digitally communicate. We don’t write letters today, we go online and it’s honestly a shame.
Can you imagine sending a heartfelt note instead of a SnapChat or a text? Imagine you had a gorgeous pen and a set of stationery with a letterhead template for your family that you could send out to others? It’s a lost art and writing a letter should never have been lost. It’s a personal thing to do and it’s under-practiced for most people! You should be looking at making a personal connection with others where you can, and a letter is the best way to do it. Here are give great reasons to keep writing letters:
- You don’t have any interruptions. When you type up an email, it’s easy for pop ups to occur and interrupt your flow. When you put a fountain pen to paper, you are going to write what you want to write without interruption and that can be a wonderful thing to do. Handwritten letters allow you to express your thoughts and get across what you’re trying to say to someone you care about.
- You have time to think. Letters usually take longer to write, which means that you have more time to think about what you want to say and to whom you want to say it. You have to think about what you want to get across and really make it beautiful. Your handwriting is going to matter, too, because the way you write conveys a lot of emotion that you might have pent up before now.
- It can look so stylish. From the type of letter paper you use to the pen that you use, you can make your letters stand out on colored paper and use beautiful pens to get your message across. You can even cultivate envelopes that are patterned and beautiful. When you add letter headed paper you can even show off a little.
- It can be fun. Who doesn’t want to feel like a tragic heroine penning a letter to her darling? If you’re a storyteller, you will love the chance to write a letter and the entire practice will be much more enjoyable as a result.
- The person who receives it will love it. Letter writing is such a rarity in our culture today, so you need to think about how happy the recipient will be to receive such a thought-out thing. There is a lot of thinking and care that goes into a letter, and it’s just one of many reasons that you should keep writing!
Writing letters may be lost as an art, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t discover it at any time in life. Pick it up now and make it your thing.
